Captain America Coaster

Yarn needed (worsted weight):

  • 5-6 yards white

  • 3-4 yards blue

  • 7-8 yards red

US G (4.5 mm) crochet hook

Finished size: about 3 1/2” across

Abbreviations:

  • sc = single crochet

  • sl st = slip stitch

  • ch = chain

  • hdc = half double crochet

  • dc = double crochet

  • sts = stitches

  • inc = increase, working 2 sts in one st

Round 1:

With white, 5 sc into magic ring, sl st into first stitch to join

Round 2:

[ch 3, sl st into first back bump of ch (see Fig B), hdc into next back bump of chain, sl st into next st]

Work from [ to ] 4 more times (once in each stitch as indicated in Fig A)

You will now have the center star. Fasten off white yarn and weave in ends.

Round 3:

This round is a little confusing. The basic concept is that you are starting in the “valley” of the star, which is where you did the anchoring slip stitches in Round 2. On each side of the star, there are 2 stitches, for a total of 5 stitches in between each point of the star.

In Figure C, the dc are indicated in purple, the hdc in yellow, and the sc in blue.

Join with blue yarn in the valley of the star, working in the back loop.

You will work in the back loop for all stitches.

Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), hdc, sc, sc, hdc,

[dc, hdc, sc, sc, hdc] 4 more times (25 sts)

Join to ch 3 with sl st and fasten off, weave in ends

Round 4:

Attach red yarn, ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc 1, hdc inc, work [hdc 2, hdc inc] 6 times, hdc 4 (32 sts)

Fasten off and weave in ends

Round 5:

Attach white yarn, ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc 2, hdc inc, work [hdc 3, hdc inc] 7 times (40 sts)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Round 6:

Attach red yarn, ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc 3, hdc in, work [hdc 4, hdc inc] 7 times (48 sts)

Fasten off and weave in ends.
